April Pater, M.A.

Registered Counselling Therapist (NS), Registered Psychotherapist (ON)

Hi!

I began my study of psychology at York University, where I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Afterwards, I went on to receive a post-graduate certificate in Addictions and Mental Health at Durham College and began my career working with people with addictions issues as well as marginalized communities. I later went on to complete a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology before opening a private practice, in Ontario, in 2016. In June, 2021 my family and I made the move to beautiful Nova Scotia and I decided to continue to serve clients in Ontario as well as expand my virtual practice into Nova Scotia. All in all, I have over 10 years experience providing therapy to people from all walks of life who have presented with, and worked on, a variety of concerns.

I use an eclectic approach to therapy, pulling from many psychotherapeutic theories and approaches. A few of these include: Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI).

DBT is a therapy that has been shown to be effective with Borderline Personality Disorder, addictions, issues with impulse control, self-harming and suicidality, and difficulty managing emotions. DBT involves learning about and practicing skills for distress tolerance, emotion regulation, mindfulness, and effective interpersonal relationships.

CBT involves examining the connection between thoughts and behaviours. By restructuring your thought patterns, you will notice changes in your feelings and behaviours. This form of therapy is especially effective for depression and anxiety.

MI is a strength-based approach that helps clients to find their internal motivation. This counselling style helps clients to work towards a specific goal by aiding them in exploring the reasons they wish to change, discussing any barriers to change, and celebrating every success. MI can be used in combination with other forms of therapy and is helpful for any client wishing to make changes in their life.

Above all, I believe in being client-centred. This means that I hold the utmost respect for the unique strengths and struggles of each client. I am not here to dictate what goals a client 'should' work towards, nor is my job to prescribe a set treatment. By working with my clients I strive to gain a deeper understanding of who they are as individuals and to help them realize their potential through our collaborative relationship.

Outside of work, I am a mother to 3 boys (ages 9 and under) and 2 cats :) We are a pretty low-key family who enjoy the simple things in life such as spending time in nature, a good book or movie,  and socializing with friends.

I look forward to getting to know you and encourage you to message me to introduce yourself or with any questions you may have!
